Although The Truth Is: A Book of Poetry is one of the shortest poetry books I’ve come across, it is one of the most relatable poetry books that I’ve read. The poems about the father really struck hard. I haven’t lost my dad, but the lines still made me pause and ache at the thought. In my opinion, writing about yourself can be one of the hardest things a writer or poet could do. Trisha Monroe wrote these poems wonderfully. They weren’t just pretty words on a page, they were real—family, friends, relationships, and just life in general. Monroe’s book makes me want to read more poetry books like this.
Most of these poems had multiple stanzas, and it was like a breath of fresh air because a lot of poetry these days are limited to a page or half a page. Reading these longer poems really showed me how much you can put into poetry!
