A Prophecy of Wings is a retelling of Thumbelina, where the main character’s name is Lina and her adventures are similar to those found in the movie, but Jane McGarry’s book has a twist ending that is very different from the film.
I am a huge fan of retellings and grew up watching Thumbelina, so I was extremely excited to read this novel. The plot never dragged and because of that, it was a quick and easy read. However, I did find myself wanting more description of the setting and characters. I wanted to know what everything looked like at all times, and I didn’t always get the details I craved. Though Knox was easily my favorite character, Dahlia was a close second. Dahlia’s background seemed effortlessly weaved into the story, and I enjoyed the viewpoints of the chapters switching to accommodate both Lina and Dahlia.
McGarry also did a great job of building up the tension leading to Lina’s true love’s first kiss, and I was on the edge of my seat when it happened. I couldn’t put the book down, but the resolution kind of fell flat for me. Even though it was a bit predictable, the twist ending made up for the first kiss.
Overall, A Prophecy of Wings has a lot of good things going for it and the author should definitely keep publishing. Although I enjoyed this book, I firmly believe that her “breakthrough” book is waiting to be written, and when it is, I’ll be here to read it!
